Herb Garden Pathway

This design was about trying out a new design process – Dragon Dreaming – and exploring my long-term love of herbs and vision of creating a herb garden, or perhaps on a larger scale, a herb growing business.

I went on a weekend introduction to Dragon Dreaming in which we were able to go through a design process for projects of our choice.

Dragon Dreaming was developed at the Australian Gaia Foundation by John Croft. There is an e-book with more information on the process and tools. In summary, from the website:

“Dragon Dreaming is inspired by social and environmental activism, the new physics, Gaia and Earth sciences, living systems and chaos and complexity theory, and the ancient sustainable wisdom of indigenous cultures and Australian Aborigines.”

“Dragon Dreaming offers methods for the realisation of creative, collaborative and sustainable projects and organisations, built upon three principles:

  • personal growth – commitment to your own healing and empowerment
  • community building – strengthening the communities of which you are a part
  • service to the Earth – enhancing the wellbeing and flourishing of all life.”

hmm… sounds like permaculture… but is it?

So, for my herb garden design, I tried out the Dragon Dreaming process and tools and tested each stage against permaculture ethics and principles. I’ve documented this by outlining the Dragon Dreaming design process, then documenting the Herb Garden design process, then analysing DD according to permaculture design.
