whole garden site survey

In addition to the general observations about the garden made the previous year, as well as the existing base maps and zone, sector, slope analyses, I made a more detailed site survey of the side and front gardens as well as maps for the whole garden.

The side garden

sidebefore

  • flat landform
  • essentially a narrow throughway around the side of the linking the front and back of the house, very useful for gardening and transporting things
  • bordered by either house walls or the fence and tall hedge towards the car park
  • soil is poor quality, very compacted, clay, about 50cm deep, but with rubble near the house walls
  • existing vegetation: a large old rhubarb plant, a large area of Japanese anemones, a few unproductive raspberry plants, large rambling rose on a trellis, grass

The front garden

  • divided into two parts by a path used by neighbours on foot and sometimes by car when elderly neighbours drive to their front doors with shopping
  • area nearest house:┬ásoil is poor quality, very compacted, clay, about 50cm deep, but with rubble near the house walls, existing vegetation: grass
  • area over the path: landform slopes away from the house side and drops steeply over a ridge to a road below,┬ásoil is poor quality, very compacted, clay, about 50cm deep, existing vegetation: grass, bordered to the north east with large trees casting a lot of shade
